Text "Chtíc, aby spal" – A. V. Michna z Otradovic (1600–1676)
Poetic translation by Alicia Cozine

The text and tune of this piece come from a Baroque Czech carol titled “Chtíc, aby spal,” which translates literally to, roughly, “Wanting Him to Sleep.” The original Czech text depicts Mary with the baby Jesus, softly lulling him to sleep in the night, while also reflecting her, and the world’s, worship of the Christ child as the savior. This new translation, born of the Unitarian Universalist tradition, takes a broader view and celebrates the divinity, wisdom, and miracle of each child that is born, and the wonder of the love between that child and their parent.
